This year’s Rotary International Convention will be held in Asia, Bangkok, Thailand to be exact. The RI Convention is Rotary’s biggest event. This celebration of Rotary fosters fellowship, creates learning opportunities, and helps attendees experience the scope and power of Rotary. By participating in an RI Convention, one is said to gain a broader appreciation of Rotary’s global impact and strengthen your commitment to service.
I was set on attending this big event since last year but not for the same reason as most Rotarians. Hey, we’re talking about Bangkok after all; the land of smiles and yummy tasty food and bargain shopping and beautiful sights. But most especially, I’m in it for the camaraderie and bonding with my fellow club members. This promises to be a wonderful adventure.
But, like the diligent Rotarian that I am, I updated myself on convention affairs. I was curious about what the convention had to offer. Daily I would check on the convention website, reading up on suggested activities, places to visit and what to watch out for. Slowly, I was getting more and more interested with the possibilities.
I could find out how fellow Rotarians developed their service projects by visiting club and district project booths. We could also partner with other Rotarians in an international project or exchange. I could learn more about PolioPlus and other Foundation programs during plenary sessions and workshops that show how Rotarians take humanitarian action and promote peace and understanding throughout the world. As PR Director, I could expand our club’s network of international contacts.
The opportunities are abundant. All I need to do is have an open mind and absorb everything around me. Yes, I’m so excited. My first RI Convention; just one more night to go and I’m off to the Land of Smiles and vast Rotary opportunities.
